Following last nights 4-0 destruction of Hereford at Roots Hall Southend who many fell have underperformed this season find themselves just 4 points outside the play off places with 9 fixtures left to play, so can they make it?

Although Southend have played more fixtures than the sides they are challenging for the play off places at this stage in the season points on the board are more welcome than the games in hand.

The club lie in 10th place but as mentioned above are only four points off the last play off spot which is currently occupied by Port Vale, the Essex club will hope last nights resounding victory over Hereford will be a turning point as before this victory their form had been pretty horrendous.

From the five fixtures before last nights victory Southend picked up only 2 points via draws with Gillingham and Northampton the loses came at the hands of Play off chasing rivals Crewe Alexandra mid table battlers Lincoln City and relegation threatened Morecombe. Even the most biased fan will not tell you this is the type of form that can help the club make an instant return to League One.

A huge problem seems to be the sides lack of goals take aside Barry Corr who noticed his 15th and 16th on the campaign against Hereford no other member of the squad has hit double figures, players like attacking midfielder Louie Soares goal return have been poor, he has taken part in 29 games with 17 goals and only hit the back of the net once.

That’s not an example of singling out an individual because his performances have not necessarily been bad but you would have expected more goals from him, the same could be said for nearly every other member of the Southend squad.

It’s a term that’s used too much in Football but for Southend to get themselves into the play offs now, I know 4 points is not a major gap but considering some of the sides above them have up to 2 games in hand and there’s 4 sides they would need to overtake its going to be a tough ask.

There are some tough looking fixtures remaining for Southend too, as you would expect at the business end of the season. Although they only face two sides above them in Stevenage and Port Vale they face many of the sides scrambling for their Football League existence.

Teams sitting near the foot of the table such as Burton and Stockport will be no pushovers, however should Southends results go with form and they beat all the sides below them in the table then I believe they will end the season in a play off position.

However I do not think this will happen, the sides form has been so up and down and they could drop points to literally anyone, I am predicting a mid table finish between 9-11th and they will not trouble the teams in the hunt for play off places.

On another not for those of you who have not visited the site before i have previously conducted an interview with your former youth team prodigy Medi Abalimba, to view the interview click the following link: https://shoutsfromthestands.wordpress.com/2010/11/26/player-interviews-team-mates-derby-countys-medi-abalimba/

What are your thoughts? Do you think my views are completely wrong? Where will Southend finish? What does the side need to reach the play offs? Do the side need the battling spirit like 9 cup ties to reach the play offs? Leave a comment and let us know your thoughts
